After a group of Proud Boys disrupted a Drag Story Hour at a library near her former school, longtime public school educator Sue Granzella felt compelled to act. Drawing from more than three decades in the classroom, she set out across California to record the experiences of teachers, librarians, and educators who have faced harassment, intimidation, and threats for providing honest education about race, identity, immigration, religion, and sexuality.

Many people associate California with openness and progress, but Granzella reveals how the battles over education and public libraries have reached communities across the state. While places like Florida and Texas have become symbols of escalating culture conflicts, California has also become a major battleground where educators and librarians are confronting organized efforts to restrict what students can learn.
