Pushed to the Edge: Teachers’ Stories from the Culture Wars

Powerful stories of courage and resistance from teachers and librarians standing up against rising intolerance and attacks on education.

“Heartbreaking yet hopeful, Pushed to the Edge is a powerful revelation of the war taking place against public school teachers and their students.” —JoAnne Tompkins, author of What Comes After

After a group of Proud Boys disrupted a Drag Story Hour at a library near her former school, longtime public school educator Sue Granzella felt compelled to act. Drawing from more than three decades in the classroom, she set out across California to record the experiences of teachers, librarians, and educators who have faced harassment, intimidation, and threats for providing honest education about race, identity, immigration, religion, and sexuality.

Many people associate California with openness and progress, but Granzella reveals how the battles over education and public libraries have reached communities across the state. While places like Florida and Texas have become symbols of escalating culture conflicts, California has also become a major battleground where educators and librarians are confronting organized efforts to restrict what students can learn.

Pushed to the Edge brings together firsthand accounts from those living through these conflicts. It shares the stories of teachers, librarians, and students caught in the middle of national debates over representation, inclusion, and academic freedom.

Readers meet educators like Cassandra, a young queer woman of color and award-winning teacher whose career was derailed by harassment and hostility from parents who opposed her identity and her commitment to her students. Her experience reflects the struggles of many who have been pushed out of the profession they dedicated their lives to.

The book also highlights communities where educators have organized to defend inclusive education, including efforts in Temecula, where teachers and residents challenged school board decisions aimed at removing aspects of Black history from classrooms.

Featuring the voices of Black educators, queer teachers, targeted librarians, and students navigating a changing educational landscape, Pushed to the Edge is both a warning and a testament to resilience. Though centered on California, its message reaches far beyond state lines—revealing what is at stake in schools and libraries while honoring the people who continue to fight for truth, understanding, and the freedom to learn.
